Steakmaker Veal Program for Red Veal Calves
Improve the Performance of your Red Veal Program.....Get the Steakmaker Advantage!

Stayner Feed Service knows the importance of nutrition in a successful Red Veal Program.  This is why we promote and suggest that producers follow the Shur-Gain Steakmaker Program.  Those who have switched to this program have found significant improvements in their average daily gain and finish weights.  Steakmaker Feeds are manufactured with high quality ingredients, salts, and minerals here at Stayner Feed Service.  The following provides effective management tips, health tips and feeding guidelines that help optimize results from the Steakmaker Program from birth to market.

         Management Tips

  1. Dip the newborn calves' navel cord with Teat Dip to prevent infection.
  2. Follow label directions, inject the newborn calf with: Vitamin A & D, Vitamin E and Selenium, and Iron.
  3. It is important that the newborn calf receive colostrum as soon as possible after birth.  The calf must obtain "passive immunity" from the dam through immunoglobulins in the colostrum.  Feed 2 - 3.8 litres of colostrum with in the first hour after birth.  Do not exceed 10% of the calf's body weight in daily intake.  Feed colostrum for the first 3 days.
  4. The calf pen should be clean and dry.  Use Heavy Duty Cleaner and Germ Kill to properly clean and disinfect the pen prior to introducing the calves to the pen.
  5. After the first 4 days, calves can be converted to Grober VG Veal Milk Replacer.  Follow the mixing directions on the bag.
  6. Introduce Shur-Gain High Performance Pelleted Calf Starter or Shur-Gain 20% Calf Starter Grower at day 7 to encourage early consumption.  Grain is the most important feed ingredient promoting rapid rumen development.
  7. Calves can be weaned off milk replacer by by the end of the 5th week as long as they are consuming 1-1.5 kg of Calf Starter Grower per day for at least 3 consecutive days.
  8. Hay is not essential to the program, but may help prevent bloat.  A small amount of hay can also prevent calves from eating their bedding.  If feeding hay, limit to a maximum of 0.25 kg per head per day.
  9. Implant with Compudose, Ralgro or Synovex C. Follow label directions.
  10. Keep feed fresh in the manger at all times.  Clean out any wet, soiled, moldy or fine feed.
  11. Supply adequate clean fresh water at all times.  The water source should not be too close to the feed manger, as calves will soil the water and/or ration by frequent visits between water and feed.
  12. At 7 weeks of age, begin converting the calves to shelled corn and 36% Red Veal Steakmaker Supplement (0% ECP) mixture by blending with the Calf Starter.  Gradually, over 7 days, replace all of the calf starter with the 3 to 1 mixture of corn and Red veal Steakmaker Supplement by weight.
  13. Feed by weight 1 part 36% Red Veal Steakmaker Supplement (0% ECP) to 3 parts whole shelled corn fee choice until calves reach 125 kg (225 lb)  body weight.  High moisture corn can be used at a rate of 3.5 parts to 1 part supplement by weight.  If rolled barley partially replaces whole shelled corn in your feeding program, use a 4:1 ratio by weight with the 36% Red Veal Steakmaker Supplement (0% ECP).  Continue to remove grain fines from the feed bunk.
  14. Use clean, high quality whole shelled corn - free from fines.
  15. At 125 kg (225 lb) body weight, calves can be changed over from 36% Red Veal Steakmaker Supplement (0 ECP) to 36% Opti-Glo Steakmaker Supplement (12% ECP) or 36% Heavy Red Vealer Supplement (12% ECP).  At this point, change the feeding proportionto 4 parts corn to 1 part supplement by weight.  If calves are marketed beyond 220 kg (500 lb) body weight, the ration may be changed to 5 parts corn to 1 part 36% Opti-Glo Steakmaker Supplement (12% ECP) by weight.  Note: Some producers may wish to market their calves on the 0% ECP product in order to reduce the number of feed supplements used and keep the program simple.  This is a sound nutritional program alternative.
  16. Make Optimizer Mineral available at all times.
  17. It is important to keep fresh feed in front of the calves at all times.  A slow constant digestive process is necessary for the program to support a maximum growth rate and calf health.  If the bunk is empty for too long, calves will over eat when feed is replaced.
  18. Rumensin has been added as an aid in the prevention of Coccidiosis.  There is no withdrawal required.
